Santa Muerte

There’s no judgement here. Botanica 47 is a place of unity and acceptance. This little nook of the internet, and the small space of our mysterious little shop has been the product of a spiritual journey to find peace and self acceptance. We have enough to bring us down, so why not faith in something that will only lift you up when you need her? That’s the lure of Santa Muerte. So simple. She doesn’t judge, just works with those who want to work with her.

Energy is all around us. Some of us are better at focusing it than others. Our intentions and our wishes need somewhere to go. For us she’s like a good friend you can have a drink with, tequila, preferably. She’s a bit mysterious, and she might have an eating disorder, but she’s there to tell you, “You got this, bitch! I got ya back!”. And isn’t that what we all need to hear?

Santa Muerte is considered a Mexican folk saint. She’s a bit of an amalgamation of different ideas. She’s part grim reaper, part Virgin Mary, and part Aztec goddess of death. With a rapidly growing following, spreading from Mexico into the Americas and now parts of Europe, she’s thought to be the resurrection of the sacred feminine.

Often associated with Mexican drug culture, Santa Muerte has a bad reputation with certain groups of people. However, she’s been around long before narco culture was a thing in Mexico, or anywhere else. All in all, it makes sense though, that a lady without judgement isn’t going to be picky about who she hangs with. Ironically, you know who else hung with sex workers and societal undesirables? Okay, okay, not going there. Just saying.

Let’s talk about devotion for a moment. Like we said, it’s an easy relationship, very give and take. She likes offerings, and let’s just say she can hang at any party. Santa Muerte has a sweet tooth, and she also likes alcohol, flowers, smokables, and candles. The bony lady has a thing for colors too. We love colors here and their meanings, remember, focusing your energy to manifest magic. She abides to most of the same color magic as anything else, but most popular choices are black, white and red. Black is usually for protection, white for health and well being, and red is for love.

Oh yeah, and there’s Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, which is her saint day. She’s still a death goddess after all, and with that comes the ability to usher souls between the veil of the living and the dead. Every November 1st, we take some time to honor the bony lady along with all those that have come before.
